Ditch. The. Scale.
By Ray Peleckas
The scale is your enemy!
So many of us use the scale as the end all be all of a successful fitness program. I'm going to tell you why you should ditch the scale and use other body metrics to judge success.
The scale gives you your overall body weight, a combination of fat mass and lean body mass. The scale does not tell you the breakdown of that weight. For example, two women of the same age and height weigh the same at 130lbs. One of those women has 20% fat mass and 80% lean body mass while the other has 35% fat mass and 65% lean body mass. As you can see from the picture above, although they weigh the same they look totally different. Which would you rather look like?
Muscle is more dense than fat, meaning 5lbs of muscle will take up less space than 5lbs of fat as pictured above.
Let's say you work out for 2 months and the scale says you lost only 5 pounds. Odds are you would be disappointed at only losing 5 pounds, right? Yet, what if I told you that over that same 2 month period you lost 10 lbs of fat and gained 5 lbs of muscle? This is still an overall loss of 5 lbs on the scale but now we know that you really lost 10 lbs of bad fat and gained 5 lbs of good muscle. Sounds a lot better, right?
And it is better! Why is it better to gain muscle mass? When you increase muscle mass, you increase your resting metabolic rate. The resting metabolic rate (RMR) is how many calories your body needs to perform basic functions like breathing and circulation. More muscle creates a higher demand for energy, since muscle will need to maintain itself at rest and during exercise.
So if you gained 5 lbs of muscle this means your RMR has increased and your body is now burning more calories at rest compared to 2 months ago.
Bottom line, make sure to accurately obtain your fat mass and lean body and let these metrics determine your success. The bod pod is the most accurate way in the world to calculate these metrics and there is only one within 40 miles of Boston. It is located in Belmont at the BodyBurn by Ray studio. Schedule an assessment to really see what your body is made of so you can make accurate goals.
